Man Utd: £65m star 'being monitored by Ten Hag' for Old Trafford move

Incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be keeping a close eye on Frenkie de Jong’s situation at Barcelona, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Ten Hag is set to arrive at Old Trafford this summer, and already seems to be drawing up a list of potential transfer targets.

Ten Hag and de Jong previously worked together at Ajax, winning a league and cup double in 2018/19.

De Jong subsequently moved to Barcelona in 2019 for £65m, but has struggled to make the desired impact at the Nou Camp.

In his three years at the club, the Catalan giants have not won La Liga, and they have fallen some way adrift of Real Madrid this term. It has been claimed that de Jong is not happy with his current situation at Barcelona.

Ten Hag still seems to have plenty of faith in the midfielder, though, and is reportedly interested in reuniting with his fellow Dutchman at United.

O’Rourke has suggested that ten Hag would be keen on signing de Jong, and he believes the 24-year-old has the necessary attributes to strengthen United’s midfield.

Speaking about de Jong, O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m sure ten Hag will be monitoring his situation. They’ve enjoyed success together in the past, and de Jong would be a big upgrade in that Man United midfield, if they were able to sign him.”

The Red Devils have also been linked with England pair Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips. The duo have plenty of Premier League experience, which could give them the edge over de Jong.
