Man United's David de Gea decision should already be made as summer transfer plans laid out

The FA Cup final should be David de Gea’s final game in a Manchester United shirt, according to the majority of Reds fans who responded to our poll following the Sevilla defeat.

De Gea played a massive part in United’s Europa League exit, taking the blame for the home side’s third of the evening while also attracting criticism for his part in the opener.

He bounced back three days later with an outstanding performance in the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton, demonstrating his full range of shot-stopping skills to keep the Seagulls goalless in 120 minutes.

The Spaniard was again ineffective in the shootout, however, and there is a feeling among fans that if United are to progress, they need to do it without their long-standing No.1.

Asked whether United should give De Gea a new contract, almost two-thirds of respondents (66%) said no. A new goalkeeper is only one of a number of positions United need to strengthen in the summer, however, with a whopping 98% of fans believing three or more players are needed.

Such was the despondency following the European exit, one in 10 fans are actually of the opinion that Erik ten Hag needs to bring in seven or more new faces to improve the squad.

But despite the flaws in the squad being ruthlessly exposed in Seville, United fans are split on whether the required remedial work will be carried out ahead of 2023/24.

Those expecting United to make the signings needed were edged out 51-49 by those predicting disappointment. What is clear, though, is that it won’t just be the end of the road for De Gea in the summer.
