Man United have two iconic shirt numbers ready for Matthijs de Ligt and next signing

Manchester United are still working around the clock to fine-tune their squad for this season. Deals for Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee were rubber-stamped last month - costing around £90million combined - with further signings on the radar for Erik ten Hag and key figures behind the scenes.

Ineos remain 'open' to bringing in up to three centre-backs in total this summer. Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite are two concrete targets after Yoro was sworn in - with The Toffees even rejecting two bids from United for their England U21s international.

De Ligt is thought to have verbally agreed personal terms. However, due to a gap in valuation and United striving to generate funds through sales, that proposed move has stalled over recent weeks as the club also eye up a push for Bayern teammate, right-back Noussair Mazraoui.

Although there is still some negotiating to do before United complete any follow-up transfers, they have left two iconic shirt numbers free on the proviso they do tie up more defensive recruits. De Ligt in particular might have his eye on two dream options he's donned for club and country.

De Ligt wore No.4 for Ajax and he currently wears the same number for Bayern. On the international stage, though, De Ligt was assigned No.3 at Euro 2024 this summer. United chose not to replace Eric Bailly as their No.3 when he left Old Trafford last summer.

As for the No.4 shirt, the last player to have that number for United was Fiorentina loanee Sofyan Amrabat. Included on a four-man midfield long-list, there is chance the Moroccan World Cup hero could return
