Man United had clever ploy to secure Frenkie de Jong transfer – but he never saw it

Manchester United reportedly created a mock video featuring Frenkie de Jong in a club shirt in an attempt to persuade the midfielder to move to Old Trafford - though he never watched it.

The Red Devils recently sacked Erik ten Hag following a tumultuous two-plus seasons at the helm. Ten Hag, 53, brought in 11 former Eredivisie players and five he'd previously managed at Ajax - Andre Onana, Matthijs de Ligt, Antony, Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez.

However, his top target was De Jong, who consistently refused to leave Barcelona, despite being pursued for nearly three seasons. With his calmness on the ball and excellent passing skills, De Jong, 27, was often seen as being the key to Ten Hag's plan, but his unwillingness to quit the Camp Nou left United with no other option but to get creative.

As per The Athletic, they produced a simulated video of De Jong donning a red United jersey alongside some of the club's legends. But for whatever reason, it was never sent to the player.

De Jong stayed put at Barcelona while United spent roughly £180million attempting to resolve their midfield problems. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen were signed and paired together, with the former joining from Real Madrid for a whopping £70m.

The following year, Mason Mount was brought in from Chelsea for £60m, and a further £50m was spent on Manuel Ugarte, who joined from PSG in the summer. All four signings have struggled in one form or another, leaving United a little disjointed in the centre of the park.
