Man jailed for assaulting staff member at train station shop after trying to steal razors

A man who assaulted a member of staff at a train station shop after attempting to steal razor blades has been jailed.

Peter Quinn, 32, of Moston Bank Avenue, Moston, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop and assault at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Friday, June 9.

The court heard how Quinn entered the Boots shop at Manchester Piccadilly station at around 6.30am on Tuesday, May 30. He then tried to steal two boxes of razor blades, before a staff member attempted to stop him from leaving the store.

Quinn then punched the male staff member with force, causing him to fall to the floor and lose consciousness. He was left shaken by the incident and was later taken to hospital to be checked over.

Quinn was sentenced to 18 weeks in jail and was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £153.99.

Investigating officer PC Brandon Fairbrother-Clarke, of British Transport Police, said: "Quinn showed no remorse for this violent assault on a member of staff who was simply doing his job.”

"Violence and abuse of retail staff will not be tolerated and those who, like Quinn, think station staff are fair game, will be dealt with robustly and brought before the courts."
