Man in critical condition after being struck by car on A34 bypass

A man is fighting for his life after being struck by a car on a major bypass near Manchester. Officers say the pedestrian is in a critical condition at Manchester Royal Infirmary after being involved in a collision on the A34 last night (June 17).

Police were called out to the northbound carriageway of the Wilmslow Bypass at 11.38pm yesterday, following reports of a pedestrian walking between Dean Row and the Bollin Valley roundabout. While police were on their way to the scene, another call was received at 11.41pm, stating that the man had been involved in a collision with a red Volkswagen T-Roc Life.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to hospital, where he remains this afternoon (Tuesday). Cheshire Police says the driver of the car, a 33-year-old man from Portwood, Stockport, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

He remains in custody at this time and was not injured in the collision. Enquiries are ongoing and police are now urging any witnesses, or anyone with video footage from the scene, to come forward.

Inspector Anton Sullivan, of the Cheshire Police Roads and Crime Unit, said: "Enquiries in relation to this incident are ongoing and we’re committed to doing all we can to establish what took place. As part of our enquiries we’re keen to hear from anyone who was in the area and believes they may have witnessed the incident.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who believes that they may have seen the pedestrian in the moments before the collision. The same goes for anyone with any dashcam footage which may aid the investigation."

Information can be passed on to Cheshire Police by calling 101 or reporting it
