Police scrambled to the scene and cordoned off the road early into Monday morning. Pictures from the area showed a huge response as emergency crews carried out enquiries. Nearby residents told of hearing a 'crash' before seeing the whole road shut off, with a white tent also erected at the roadside.

One woman, who lives with her child in flats nearby told the M.E.N: "I just heard a crash at ten to nine and I when I went to look, the whole road was blocked off and there was police, ambulances and fire engines and white tent." Another witness reported seeing T.A.U. and multiple other police vehicles, including forensics, arriving at the scene.

The fire service confirmed they attended the incident on Sunday evening, with two fire engines at the scene and a Technical response unit. Following an update from Greater Manchester Police, it has since been confirmed that there was a fatality, with another man left seriously injured.
