Man City v Liverpool: Steven Gerrard's epic highlights from 2013 clash

Liverpool travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon to take on Manchester City in an encounter that could go a long way towards deciding the destination of this season’s Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola’s men have a slender one point advantage over their Merseyside rivals heading into the crunch clash, but the two sides were nowhere near as close in the table when Liverpool visited City back in 2012/2013.

Nine years ago, Brendon Rodgers was less than 12 months into his reign at Anfield – and in charge of a Reds side that would go on to finish seventh in the league that season.

Little was expected of Liverpool on the day as they squared off with reigning champions City. However, a superb performance from captain Steven Gerrard helped Rodgers’ side to an unlikely 2-2 draw.

Almost singlehandedly rallying his troops against the might of Roberto Mancini’s City, Gerrard was on top form in all aspects of his game.

Running the show in midfield for Liverpool, Gerrard pinged the ball around with supreme authority throughout. He didn’t shirk his defensive responsibilities, either, frequently working hard to thwart the likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Edin Dzeko.

The Anfield icon was at the heart of much of what his side produced in an attacking sense, too. First, he bagged an assist when he set Daniel Sturridge up for Liverpool’s opener just before the half-hour mark.

Then, with 17 minutes remaining, Gerrard capped his masterclass with a blistering long-range drive that was miles too good for City shot-stopper Joe Hart.

You can check out Gerrard’s performance, which may well be the most underrated of his legendary career, below.
