Man City's first transfer decision of the summer is obvious amid latest injury blow

For the third time this season, Ederson was substituted before the second half of a game for Manchester City. For the third time this season, Stefan Ortega strode off the bench and helped the Blues to some crucial Premier League points.

Ederson will end the season with his fewest amount of Premier League appearances in a campaign since signing for City in 2017, in part due to injury issues and also due to the form of Ortega when replacing him. Gone are the days where Ederson must start every game because the back-up option isn't good enough.

If Ederson needs a rest, Ortega is always ready to step up or step in - like he did at the Bernabeu earlier this month in a tactical decision rather than a fitness-related one. It's no surprise he is attracting transfer interest this summer and is open to the possibility of leaving.

Put simply, City cannot let that happen. Ortega was assured again when playing the second half at Nottingham Forest after Ederson had been shaky (to put it politely) in the opening 45 minutes. Even before clattering into Willy Boly that eventually saw him withdrawn, Ederson was flapping at crosses, dropping the ball at the feet of Forest players and was a far cry from his usually-assured self.
