Man City ‘make’ record-breaking contract decision on Phil Foden as defender ‘nears exit’

Manchester City are due to table Phil Foden a British record contract worth £375,000-a-week, according to a report.

Foden, 24, enjoyed a stellar year at the Etihad Stadium and was named Premier League player of the season after 27 goals and 12 assists in 53 club games. The playmaker is also due to play a key role in England’s Euro 2024 campaign.

Foden has three years on his current City deal and there are no inklings that he could leave the Blues, but the club apparently wish to ward off any potential interest by tying him down to a lucrative new deal as his prominence in the first-team rises.

The Sun says Foden will be offered an eye-watering weekly wage packet of £375,000 post-Euros. His City teammate Kevin De Bruyne has been connected with a Saudi exit this summer while star striker Erling Haaland is the subject of constant links with Real Madrid, albeit he looks certain to stay at City next season.

The report claims City will offer a six-year deal and will begin discussions before the start of the new season. It is expected that Man City could wave goodbye to a few players in the next 12 months in order to free up the wage bill.

One of those who could be leaving in the near future is left-back Sergio Gomez. The defender is being eyed by Real Sociedad, according to Spanish outlet Diario AS, after the club opted against triggering the buy-out clause of Arsenal loanee Kieran Tierney.

The report says Sociedad sporting directors have flown to Manchester so a deal can be completed sooner rather
