Man City loanee Kalvin Phillips' nightmare West Ham spell continues with 'stupid' incident

Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips' nightmare spell at West Ham United has continued on Saturday afternoon after he was sent off against Nottingham Forest.

With the Iron down by one goal at the time, Phillips was given his marching orders following a second bookable offence at the City Ground. The midfielder picked up his first yellow card for arguing with the officials.

Moments later, he received his second yellow card after he caught Morgan Gibbs-White with a high foot. An angry Phillips was pictured storming off the pitch after the decision but former Premier League referee Mike Dean believes he only had himself to blame.

Analysing the incident on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday, Dean said: "He's just been cautioned for getting involved for no reason whatsoever. He then catches Gibbs-White.

"It's so stupid. He's wasted his time playing. He just doesn't look interested to me."

Phillips joined the Hammers during the January transfer window as he aimed to gain minutes ahead of the European Championships at the end of the season. Since joining City in 2022, Phillips has been unable to break into the first-team squad on a regular basis.

The 28-year-old made just 31 appearances for the Blues before his loan move, mostly from the bench. Since switching to the London Stadium, Phillips has been involved in four matches but was at fault for Dominic Solanke's goal for Bournemouth on his debut and played a minimal role since.

Phillips will now serve a one-match ban for the game against Brentford in the Premier League.
