Man City hero justifies Cole Palmer Chelsea transfer decision with Phil Foden example

Manchester City hero Shaun Wright-Phillips has shared his thoughts on Cole Palmer’s start at Chelsea.

Palmer rose through City’s academy and appeared to be one of several academy prospects set to have a meaningful impact on Pep Guardiola’s squad. The forward clocked up 41 appearances throughout his time at the club, including 25 as City won the treble last term, though the vast majority of his games came from the bench.

At the start of the season, it seemed as though the 21-year-old could earn a major role in City’s team, particularly given the sale of Riyad Mahrez. Palmer started and scored in the Community Shield before also finding the net in the Super Cup against Sevilla, which the Blues would win via a penalty shootout.

That was until Chelsea stumped up a deal worth £42m for the winger, who spent the summer winning the Euros with England Under 21s. It was a deal that took many by surprise, while many neutral observers would have questioned the youngster’s decision to join a Chelsea side that have specialised in a lack of continuity over recent years.

Palmer, though, has already begun to prove any doubters wrong and displayed a significant amount of leadership for Mauricio Pochettino’s team by twice scoring from the penalty spot, most recently against Arsenal at the weekend. Former City and Chelsea winger Wright-Phillips admits that Palmer may have chosen the right path, even if it is difficult to watch him flourish away from Manchester.
