Man City fans fuming over Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool FC awards are ignoring Pep Guardiola belief

Pep Guardiola certainly felt during the run-in that there was more excitement about Liverpool than there was for the team that had topped the table since December, and there was some truth in his comments. Jurgen Klopp winning two Manager of the Year awards this week then has pressed all the buttons of those who are convinced Manchester City do not get the recognition they deserve.

The arguments hinge on the fact that City won the league and Liverpool didn't, so Guardiola deserved the awards ahead of Klopp. The Liverpool manager never even got a Manager of the Month award, so why should he get the prize for the year?

That might hold more water if, for example, Kevin De Bruyne hadn't just won Player of the Season despite not winning a single monthly award; funnily enough, the furore from those Blues arguing against Klopp now was strangely silent a week ago.

There's also the fact that these prizes are decided ahead of time, and that on Sunday it was a very real possibility that Liverpool scooped up the Premier League title as their third trophy in a season that was on course for an unprecedented Quadruple. Guardiola is one of the best managers in the game but had he beaten Klopp to these awards in those circumstances, his name would have ousted Scott Parker, David Ginola and Alan Pardew from the dictionary definition of baffling individual prizes.

If you don't want to listen to those arguments, listen to your own manager. As Guardiola said magnanimously after winning the league, Liverpool have had a fantastic season and there is no shame in acknowledging quality opposition.
