Man City break Manchester United record with win over Brighton

Manchester City have broken the record for the longest home winning run by a Premier League side in all competitions following their 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.

The Blues stretched their tally to 21 matches to beat the previous record set by Manchester United. City’s last defeat on home soil came in the 2-1 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League last November. The streak will extend to a full year should they defeat Bournemouth and Young Boys in their next two matches at the Etihad.

City responded to their two successive league defeats to Arsenal and Wolves - both away - with a nervy win over Brighton. The hosts had command of the first half thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland but were almost made to pay for not taking advantage of their dominance.

Ansu Fati got a goal back for the visitors on 73 minutes to prompt a tetchy closing period, which was compounded when Manuel Akanji was sent off deep into stoppage time for a second yellow card offence.

The win took City up to top spot in the immediate aftermath of the match ahead of Arsenal’s evening clash with Chelsea and Tottenham’s home fixture with Fulham on Monday. The Treble winners have still not lost three Premier League games in a row since 2016 during Manuel Pellegrini’s tenure.

Pep Guardiola has not lost three domestic league fixtures in a row since 2015 while he was at Bayern Munich. He, meanwhile, surpassed Sir Alex Ferguson’s record for the most Champions League wins in October’s 3-1 win over RB Leipzig.
