Man City ace Erling Haaland responds to Alan Shearer after breaking his Premier League goal record

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland responded to Alan Shearer's praise after he broke the Premier League record for the most goals scored in a season.

The 22-year-old made history when he scored in the Blues' 3-0 win over West Ham on Wednesday night, scoring his 35th top-flight goal of the campaign. His second-half strike saw him break the goalscoring record held by Shearer and Andy Cole, who both registered 34 goals in their best seasons.

Newcastle legend Shearer was quick to congratulate Haaland for the incredible feat, albeit after Match of the Day colleague Gary Lineker poked fun at him for losing his title.

Lineker posted a tweet tagging Shearer, which read: "A Premier League record for Erling Haaland. 35 goals. That’s nuts. Thoughts are with Alan Shearer at this difficult time."

In response, the Magpies legend said: "Couldn’t have wanted it to go to a nicer guy. It’s only taken 28 years!!!! He’s the best."

Haaland was grateful for the praise and replied: "Thank you legend!"

Shearer scored 34 goals for Blackburn Rovers in the 1994/95 season, while Cole had achieved the feat a year earlier with Newcastle United. For Haaland, he could still go on to break Dixie Dean's record of 63 goals in a top-flight campaign. The Norwegian ace has registered 51 goals in all competition this term - and City could still play another nine games.

Despite having a realistic chance to smash the longstanding record, the Norwegian ace insisted claimed he 'does not think' about goal-scoring titles.
