Man and woman killed in Manchester smash named as driver set to appear in court

A man and a woman who were killed in a crash in south Manchester have been named - as a defendant is set to appear in court charged with causing their deaths by dangerous driving.

According to official court documents, Abdisalan Ali, of Gerry Wheale Square, Manchester, has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving on Sunday, February 20 this year.

The two killed in the incident on Wilmslow Road have been named as Geraldine Birtles and Stephen Birtles. The vehicle the 24-year-old defendant was driving has been listed as a BMW 116.

Ali is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court today (April 14). Police were called to the scene at the junction of Kingsway and Wilmslow in Didsbury after a BMW collided with two pedestrians.
