The man, aged 51, was held after police swooped at Manchester Piccadilly station on Thursday morning. The force said he remained in police custody for questioning.

In a post on the school's Facebook page, a Ravensfield Primary School spokesperson said: "There was an incident off school premises this evening. All the children are safe."

In a statement, GMP said: "Following urgent treatment at hospital, the female is recovering and remains in a stable condition. An investigation was launched immediately with local detectives being supported by specialist units.

"At around 10.30am today, with the assistance of British Transport Police and our Force Critical Wanted Unit, we were able detain and arrest a 51 year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder at Manchester Piccadilly train station and has been brought into custody for questioning."
