Malherbe honoured after passing Schalk's Stormers record: 'It's special, he is a legend'

Saturday's 30-24 loss at Cardiff Arms Park was a day to forget for the Stormers, but it did hold special significance for Springbok tighthead prop Frans Malherbe. 

The 31-year-old, born and raised in Paarl and having spent his entire professional career at Western Province, became the most capped player in the history of the Stormers. 

It was Malherbe's 124th cap for the franchise, setting a new record for appearances that was previously held by another Springbok great in Schalk Burger. 

Never a man of many words, Malherbe put the focus on the team, the performance and the result rather than making the occasion about his own personal accolades, but he did acknowledge that it was a humbling moment for him. 

"It's obviously special, but the games we have coming up are much more important. We have to focus on the games ahead," he said. 

"But yes, it's special. I feel honoured to have been part of this group for quite a few years now, so it's special on an individual basis.

"Schalk is a legend. He went on to play for both Suntory and Saracens, so in terms of total games, I'm sure he's still very far ahead.

"That's not the aim, though, to pass anyone. The aim is to contribute and win games and help the team achieve the bigger goal."

When asked if he would see out his career at the Stormers and notch up another 100 games for the franchise, Malherbe replied:  "That'll be a dream. Let's see how far I get."
