‘Makes me so angry’ – Sergio Perez furious after recovery vehicle almost kills Pierre Gasly at Japanese GP

Sergio Perez and fellow F1 drivers were left furious after a recovery vehicle incident put Pierre Gasly’s life at risk at the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix.

Extremely wet conditions at the Suzuka circuit saw Sunday’s race start in chaos with many drivers spinning off, including Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.

Visibility was limited and with the rain not easing off, the race was red-flagged after a short safety car period as a tractor was sent onto the track to recover the stricken Ferrari after the pack had driven past the incident.

But French driver Gasly, who had pitted beforehand after damaging his AlphaTauri, was yet to pass that area of track – and as a result – came dangerously close to hitting the tractor as he attempted to catch up to the rest of the field.

Gasly was visibly and audibly angry, exclaiming: ‘I could have f*****g killed myself!’

In 2014, Jules Bianchi died following a similar incident at the same track and an emotional Gasly admitted after the race that he was left fearing for his life.

Many drivers have now condemned what happened, including Red Bull’s Perez, who told Sky Sports: ‘That’s the lowest point we’ve seen of the sport in years.

‘What happened today makes me so angry. I just hope everyone in the sport never gets to see this situation ever again.

‘You are putting all the drivers at risk. We saw what happened a few years ago with our friend Jules. I don’t care about the reason for that [today’s incident], it should never happen again, ever, in any category.’

McLaren driver Lando Norris added: ‘I
