Major rescue mission with woman rushed to hospital after car is 'driven into river'

A major rescue mission was underway in Uppermill on Monday afternoon (February 26) after a car was 'driven into a river'.

A woman was rushed to hospital from the scene after the car appeared to have veered off a narrow road and down towards the water. An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene, landing on a nearby cricket ground.

A huge emergency services response attended, including a number of fire engines, police vans, ambulances and also incident response units to save the woman and recover the vehicle.

High Street was blocked off by the emergency services, with adjoining private road Ryefields Drive cordoned off for a number of hours.

It is understood the woman, whose injuries are not yet known, was taken to hospital by road ambulance after being freed from the vehicle and carried up from the crash site on a stretcher.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 5.30pm this evening (Monday 26th February), two fire engines from Oldham and Mossley fire station, along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton, were called to reports of a car driving into the river on Ryefields Drive, Uppermill.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene. A woman who was in the vehicle was assessed at the scene by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service. Firefighters worked with colleagues from North West Ambulance service to establish a safe route for the woman to be transported to the ambulance before she was taken to hospital. Firefighters were in attendance for around two hours.”

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for more information.
