Mainz grab comeback win in Bundesliga

Mainz scored two late goals to celebrate the carnival matchday with a 3-2 comeback win over Bayern Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Wearing a special carnival jersey, the hosts missed two very good chances before Patrik Schick broke the deadlock for Leverkusen in Friday's clash.

It was Schick's 20th league goal of the season, a milestone achieved by only two players in Europe's top five divisions - the other one being Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski with 26.

Aaron Martin levelled things up for Mainz in the 57th minute and Karim Onisiwo seemed to have turned things around, but his goal was disallowed after a video review.

Lucas Alario swept a deadly first-time finish past keeper Robin Zentner and appeared to seal the deal for Leverkusen, but the hosts had the final word to secure an amazing comeback with late goals from Jean-Paul Boetius and Marcus Ingvartsen.

Leverkusen remain third but could see the gap to second-placed Borussia Dortmund increase to eight points at the weekend.

Mainz moved up to seventh and are currently tied with 34 points with RB Leipzig, Hoffenheim, Freiburg and Union Berlin in a close race for a spot in the Champions League.

Leaders Bayern Munich welcome Greuther Furth on Sunday, when Borussia Dortmund host Borussia Monchengladbach.
