Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh win in sub-junior women's national championship

Hockey India Sub-junior Women’s National Championship at the Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium in Imphal on Tuesday. Madhya Pradesh beat Odisha 1-0, Jharkhand handed hosts Manipur a 4-1 defeat, Uttar Pradesh thrashed Chhattisgarh 8-2 and Haryana beat Bengal 7-0. Maharashtra, meanwhile, were announced winners in another game as Delhi did not turn up.

The victories helped all the five teams qualify for the quarterfinals alongwith Chandigarh, Punjab and Mizoram. All the quarterfinal ties will take place on Thursday. Earlier, Sejal scored a hat-trick as Haryana won their game against Bengal quite convincingly.

Captain Saavi and Riya netted a brace each as Bengal failed to put up a fight. In the next game of the day, Purnima Yadav scored five goals for Uttar Pradesh as they earned an 8-2 win over Chhattisgarh in Pool C. Vandana Patel, Komal Pal and Peetambari Kumari scored the remaining three goals for the winners.

As for Chhattisgarh, Geeta Yadav scored both the goals. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh earned a narrow victory over Odisha in Pool D as Gungun Kaur scored the only goals of the match in the 22nd minute and finish on top in the group. In the last match of the day, Jharkhand handed hosts Manipur a 4-1 defeat to finish on top in Pool B and make it to the last-four stage.
