M60 police 'sting' car clocked at more than double the speed limit

The driver of a silver BMW reached speeds of up to 70mph in 30mph zones and rushed through red lights before being caught by police with the aid of a stinger. After then abandoning the car on the M60, the motorist was arrested by Greater Manchester traffic police officers.

The police were assisted in their efforts by the Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit, the Greater Manchester Police Tactical Dog Unit and the north-west regional branch of the National Police Air Service.

A picture of the abandoned and seized vehicle was subsequently posted on the GMP Traffic Twitter account @gmptraffic, accompanied by the following words in a 5.42am tweet during the early hours of this morning: "This vehicle failed to stop for #ME48, travelling at speeds up to 70mph in 30mph zones & contravening several red lights.

"With assistance of #TVIU, @GMPDogs & @NPASNorthWest the vehicle was stung before being abandoned on #M60. Driver arrested and vehicle seized #165 @NWmwaypolice."
