Luton Town boss confirms transfer talks with Manchester United defender Teden Mengi

Luton Town boss Rob Edwards has confirmed the club are in talks with Manchester United defender Teden Mengi.

The Manchester Evening News understands the academy product is finalising his move to the Hatters today in a permanent switch. Mengi made his senior debut in the Europa League in 2020 and only went on to make one further appearance.

The centre-half, who suffered two major injuries in the last 18 months, has been loaned to Derby County and Birmingham City in recent years. Luton have been tracking the progress of the 21-year-old, who has made two Premier League 2 appearances this season.

Ahead of Luton’s first Premier League home match at Kenilworth Road on Friday against West Ham, Edwards confirmed Mengi was in negotiations with the club. He told reporters: “He's someone that we like. There are talks ongoing at the moment, but I’ve got nothing to report.

"Before anything’s finished, I’ve got to be honest, I don’t want to talk about anyone’s players. He’s someone that we like, but I don’t want to go into too much detail at the moment if you don't mind. If we can further on, then I’ll give you some more.”

Meanwhile, several more youngsters could leave the club. Alvaro Fernandez could leave on loan, as could Hannibal Mejbri albeit it is understood the midfielder intends to stay on at United for the time being.

Meanwhile, Marc Jurado could leave on a permanent basis with several clubs interested in the Spanish right-back. Charlie McNeill is set to join Stevenage on loan after a spell at Newport County last season, where he scored his first senior goal.
