Luton set to capitalise on Derby County player situation

Luton Town are closing in on the signing of out-of-contract Derby County midfielder Louie Watson, according to Football Insider.

The 21-year-old’s current deal with the Rams expired this summer and they’ve been unable to offer him new terms amid the ongoing issues with a takeover.

It seems a resolution there could be close but Watson may be back in the Championship soon.

Football Insider has reported that Luton are in advanced talks to sign the midfielder and are closing in on a deal.

Watson came through the West Ham United academy before joining Derby in 2020 and has made 15 senior appearances for the Rams since.

The Hatters are understood to be optimistic that the move can be completed soon as Nathan Jones looks to bolster his squad after their impressive play-off push last season.

Luton shocked many by securing a top-six finish but were beaten by Huddersfield Town in the semi-finals.

The Verdict

No one likes to see the struggles Derby has come through but there will be clubs ready to make the most of the potential player exodus and some already have.

It appears Luton are now set to capitalise on their situation by landing Watson, who could prove an excellent addition in years to come.

The Republic of Ireland U21 international has a bright future and Jones could prove an excellent coach to develop under.

Seeing Player of the Year Kal Naismith move to Bristol City at the start of the summer on a free transfer was a blow but the signings of Matt Macey, Alfie Doughty, and Cauley Woodrow since have helped them regain some momentum.
