Luke Shaw branded 'smug' by ex Man United player after controversial England comments

Luke Shaw has been branded as 'smug' following his controversial comments on Manchester United in recent days.

It has been a difficult season for United and many players have remained at Carrington during the two-week international break, which reflects the form of their playing squad. Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were still called upon for England duty despite their inconsistent performances at club level and the latter scored for the Three Lions against Switzerland at the weekend.

Shaw was interviewed after that match, a 2-1 win for England, and his comments on United divided opinion. "I feel like here, when I come here I always do that, we all love playing for our country," Shaw said "I think everyone does. It's always important to feel like you're wanted.

"Especially here, I always feel that. I'm not saying I don't at United but especially here, the way things are, I feel wanted, I enjoy my football."

Former United defender Paul Parker has now responded to those comments, labelling Shaw 'smug' for the way he conducted the interview.

"Shaw’s comments were wrong if I’m being honest," Parker told Betfred. "Everyone would have seen that as smug and a dig about what’s going on at Manchester United. When you look at his situation then you can come out and say that he’s not playing for United as he hasn’t been consistently good enough. It’s as simple as that.

"You’ve not been doing what you’re supposed to be doing. He’s fortunate that Gareth [Southgate] hasn’t got many left-backs to call on. Going back a bit, but if you weren’t playing for your club team then you were never going to play for your international team.
