Loyalty schemes that offer cheaper fuel prices at Tesco, Shell, Esso, BP and Sainsbury’s

Petrol prices may be inching their way back down at a snail’s pace, but they still very much feel ‘through the roof’. And shoppers could be missing out on cheaper petrol prices with these little-known loyalty schemes.

At some retailers, there’s a way to save an extra 5p a litre, just by filling up with the same branch each time.

As of Monday, August 15, the RAC reported that the average price of unleaded was 173.46p - 2p cheaper than last week - while diesel was 184.21p, also 2p cheaper that the previous week.

But with the price of filling up your shopping trolley rising and energy costs soaring, the price of fuel still stings, with many motorists still struggling to fill their tanks up amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Forecourts at Esso, BP, Texaco, Shell, Sainsbury’s and Tesco all offer loyalty schemes that a free to sign up to, which could help shave a few pence off at the pump. Here’s what each of them offer:

If you have a Nectar card, you could be earning extra points when you fill up at Esso, or use your points to knock money off your fuel bill.

At Sainsbury's you can collect one point for every £1 spent, which can then be used at Sainsbury’s or one of their partnered retailers, like Esso. But you can also collect points by purchasing fuel at Esso, or shop products in their stores.

Motorists can also collect Nectar points when washing their car at a participating Esso, simply scanning the Nectar card at the checkout counter, and waiting for them to be loaded.

Nectar points can be used to get a discount on fuel at participating Esso branded service stations, earning up to 5p off per litre. There is a minimum fill up of 10
