'Looks the other way' - Christian Eriksen breaks silence on his Man United future and Ten Hag role

Christian Eriksen thinks Erik ten Hag often 'looked the other way' instead of picking him to start games for Manchester United last season, which he didn't find easy.

Eriksen developed a formidable partnership with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in the first half of Ten Hag's first year in charge, but he sustained an ankle injury in January 2023. That issue halted his momentum and his opportunities have been limited since, as Kobbie Mainoo emerged from the academy and Ten Hag has preferred the youngster.

Eriksen made 28 appearances across all competitions in 2023/24 but made just 12 starts in the Premier League, which has raised questions marks around his future.

Eriksen, now aged 32, wants to regularly start matches and is understood to have held talks with Ten Hag during the campaign to discuss his reduced involvement. The playmaker could leave United this summer and reflected on the last 12 months in an interview with TV2 Sport.

"For me, the season has been a little different to other seasons," said Eriksen. "It has been a slightly different role. It's new to me, but it's also new to the outside world.

"It is clear, in relation to how people talk. No, it's the same. Now I was also a bit lucky that I didn't sit on the bench so much when I was younger.

"But I did it once in a while. It's never fun. That's for sure. Personally, you always want to be the one who is chosen first in the team. Sometimes the coach looks the other way. But then I play for United, so there is just a battle for places, because there are a lot of good players."
