In it, we see friendly engineer Tom Hicks installing a smart meter in under two hours and at no extra cost. Once up and running, smart meters make life easier by sending meter readings automatically and helping you keep track of spending on a handy display.

As Johnny finds out, the process is quick and easy. After taking the latest meter readings, Tom turns off the power and replaces the old meter with a smart meter - then has the power back on in no time.

Tom often gets asked whether any of the home’s appliances will be affected.

“No,” is his answer, “and I always help with resetting the clocks!”

And if you’re wondering whether you will need to do anything technical after you make the switch, that’s a no too.

“We will change the meter and record the final readings, which get sent to the energy supplier,” Tom confirms. “We also leave an exchange label on the wall with the old readings and meter serial number.”

But smart meters include more than just the box on the wall. They also come with a hand held display, which shows how much you’re spending on energy in pounds and pence in near-real time, as Tom showed Johnny in the video.
