London E-Prix: Formula E commentator Jack Nicholls offers championship prediction in pre-weekend preview

The London E-Prix returns for another year as thousands of fans are expected to descend on the ExCel centre in the east of the capital for the penultimate weekend of this year’s championship.

With several drivers still in contention for championship glory, excitement levels are reaching their peak, with two races set to take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Ahead of the event, then, Give Me Sport spoke to Formula E commentator Jack Nicholls to look ahead to the action…

Jack, what’s it like calling a race that has an indoor and outdoor section on the circuit?

“It is unique. Doing it for TV, the pictures help tell the story but it is a really interesting mix. A great example is last year it rained and it was wet outside and then dry inside so those kind of things are always quite weird and interesting to keep an eye out for and also because you’re inside you’ve got no idea what the weather’s like outside.

“You can be on the grid for the start of the race and for all I know it’s raining outside and no-one can see it and it’s not like everyone is going ‘oh it’s going to be a wet race’ because you’re not really aware.

“I don’t know if the teams have someone outside WhatsApping saying ‘guys it’s raining now,’ I don’t actually know how that works but that’s the really interesting thing.”

The indoor section could give off an arena-type feel, like a big boxing match.

“I’m hoping it’ll be that sort of indoor sporting vibe, I’m thinking like a velodrome like at the Olympics, that sort of vibe that sort of size, which would be really, really cool.

“British fans are so passionate about motor racing that hopefully we’ll get a good crowd and get some good noise going.”
