London Broncos captain Will Lovell suffers serious injury during defeat

London Broncos captain Will Lovell has suffered a ‘potential’ fractured neck during the club’s defeat to Workington in the Championship.

Interim head coach Mike Eccles confirmed the injury news following their 32-18 defeat at Derwent Park.

Lovell, 29, received treatment on the field after getting caught in a tackle after 18 minutes during the clash live on Premier Sports. The game was held up for a significant period before the back-rower was stretchered from the field.

The club confirmed that he was rushed to hospital by ambulance, which delayed the restart to the second half.

“It’s a potential fracture in his neck,” Eccles said on Premier Sports. “It’s not great but he seems okay now. He’s got some movement back in his arms. He’s up in the hospital and we’ll get some news out as soon as possible.

“Will is a big part of what we do. That didn’t help, but irrelevant to that, we let ourselves down defensively today.”

Workington claimed their first win of the season over London on Thursday afternoon. Tries from Tom Wilkinson, Caine Barnes and Marcus O’Brien and a brace from Evan Simons saw them claim their first two league points of the Championship season.

Broncos are still one point ahead on the table with three – claiming a win over Dewsbury and a draw away at Barrow so far this season.

The two sides both return to action on Sunday in a double header weekend for the second tier of the sport. London face York City Knights, while Workington will travel to the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium to play Batley Bulldogs.
