Loan recall and academy debuts - how Manchester United could solve their left-back dilemma

Erik ten Hag might need to get creative to solve Manchester United's ongoing defensive dilemma following Luke Shaw's latest injury setback.

The 28-year-old is expected to be absent for a few months, though further assessments are still required to evaluate the severity of his injury suffered at Luton Town last weekend.

United still hope Shaw could return to action before the end of the campaign, though the club won't be taking any risks by rushing him back earlier than required in an attempt to avoid any further issues.

It means United could have just one fit full-back for the foreseeable future, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka still injured and Tyrell Malacia yet to make an appearance this season as he continues his own rehabilitation.

United's struggles are made even worse by the fact they terminated Sergio Reguilon's loan from Tottenham last month. This was in part due to improving the Financial Fair Play situation, while the club also hoped they would have Shaw and Malacia both fit for the remainder of the campaign.

Alvaro Fernandez also left the club on loan to join Benfica following a spell with Granada, and he can't be recalled because he has already played for two clubs this season and would not be allowed to feature for a third.

United could look to recall Brandon Williams from his loan deal from Ipswich, but this would require an agreement between both clubs as well as a special dispensation from the EFL. It is understood to be unlikely that would be granted, even if they explored it.
