Liz Truss live updates and latest news as Prime Minister’s future in question
Liz Truss is facing increasing pressure after another tumultuous couple of days in her role as Prime Minister. Her leadership only began on September 6 but speculation is already rife about her future.
On Friday it was confirmed that she had sacked her chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng after last month's mini-budget resulted in the pound crashing and forcing a number of embarrassing government reversals in an attempt to ease panicking markets. In a press conference on Friday Ms Truss said she was "incredibly sorry" to lose Mr Kwarteng whom she called a "great friend."
She has vowed to continue as Prime Minister but some have already called for her to resign with Labour members describing the government as being "in meltdown". Opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer, meanwhile, has called for a general election.
Ms Truss is also facing a backlash from Conservative MPs with one saying that the party was "in a state of despair". She herself admitted on Friday: "I want to be honest, this is difficult. But we will get through this storm."
