Liverpool Women’s defender Meikayla Moore scores three own-goals vs USA

Liverpool Women’s and New Zealand defender Meikayla Moore had a game to forget after scoring three own-goals in a 5-0 defeat to the United States.

Moore put the ball in her own net after just five minutes as she attempted to stop a cross from USA’s left flank but diverted the effort past goalkeeper Erin Nayler.

Then just 82 seconds later, Moore scored her second own-goal of the game as Sofia Huerta’s cross was met by Margaret Purce, but her header was going off target before Moore deflected it into her own net.

Moore’s unwanted hat-trick was then complete in the 36th minute when Purce delivered a low cross into the penalty area and the 25-year-old failed with her attempted block and diverted the ball past Nayler.

Moore was then substituted before half time and was visibly upset as she made her way towards the dugout.

‘You never like to see this in football. It’s tough as a player and I can only feel for Meikayla,’ said New Zealand midfielder Annalie Longo, who was working as a pundit for the game.

‘Jitka has made the decision to sub her before halftime which is a little bit questionable but she’s got a point to prove in terms of selection.

‘She said she wants to go out and win games so it’s a tough call on that one.
