Liverpool star told to seek transfer and Aston Villa could swoop

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson thinks Joe Gomez should leave Jurgen Klopp's side this summer.

Gomez has been heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa, with Steven Gerrard 's men potentially looking to strengthen at centre-back. Villa could sign a new defender to compete with Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause at the back.

Mings and Konsa are Gerrard's first-choice pairing at the back, while Hause is in reserve but has extended his contract beyond the end of the current season. Calum Chambers can - and has - played at centre-back this season and was signed in January from Arsenal to provide cover at defensive midfield and at the back.

There could be interest in Konsa this summer, and Gomez, who has been a key player for Liverpool, is likely to be made available for transfer at the end of the campaign. Gomez was a starter for the Reds in their Premier League title-winning 2019-20 season but has struggled for game-time with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip returning to fitness.

Summer signing Ibrahima Konate has impressed, too, limiting Gomez to appearances in cup competitions this season. He featured in Sunday's 1-0 defeat of Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup quarter-final clash at the City Ground, and Johnson has told Gomez to find regular game-time for his hopes of playing in the World Cup later this year.
