Liverpool reach agreement with Ruben Amorim to replace Jurgen Klopp

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim

Sporting Lisbon Manager Ruben Amorim has reached a verbal agreement with Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the current season.

Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that 39-year-old Amorim will likely sign a seven-year contract with Liverpool.

Liverpool and Sporting Lisbon are still negotiating Amorim’s exit.

Amorim was on the list of Bayern Munich in search of a replacement for Thomas Tuchel who is expected to depart the Allianz Arena at the end of the season.

The Sporting Lisbon manager has an exit clause for this summer in his contract with Sporting.

Klopp announced earlier this year that he will stand down in the summer after nearly nine years at Anfield, where he has won the Champions League, Club World Cup, Premier League, Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups.

Xabi Alonso, a former Liverpool midfielder, was strongly linked with a return to the club as Klopp’s successor due to his outstanding work at Bayer Leverkusen.

The former Spain international is on the brink of leading the German side to their first Bundesliga title and attracted interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich but announced last month he will be staying in his role next season.

Liverpool have undergone significant changes in personnel behind the scenes since Klopp’s announcement, with former sporting director Michael Edwards returning as the chief executive of football.

Amorim appears to be the front-runner for the Liverpool job after four strong years in charge of Sporting Lisbon.

The Sporting manager has had short spells in charge of Casa Pia and Braga. He was appointed by Sporting in March 2020 and guided them to their first league title in 19 years in his first full season in charge.
