Liverpool move could tempt 'incredible' £72m star at Anfield

Liverpool could turn Frenkie de Jong’s head and beat arch-rivals Manchester United to the Barcelona star’s signature by offering him ‘something very special’ at Anfield, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Reds have not been afraid to spend big during the summer window, with the £85million addition of Darwin Nunez breaking a club-record, but boss Jurgen Klopp has the opportunity to freshen up his squad with further acquisitions ahead of Thursday’s 11pm deadline.

It is understood that de Jong has worked his way onto Liverpool’s radar and the Merseyside outfit are mulling over whether to head to the negotiating table ahead of the transfer window slamming shut.

Klopp has performed a U-turn about signing a central midfielder and admitted that he will make a move if the right player is available due to Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Curtis Jones currently being on the sidelines.

Liverpool may find it difficult to secure de Jong’s services as it is understood that the Dutchman is keen to remain with Barcelona and his agent is in talks over the restructuring of his contract at the Nou Camp.

Manchester United have been chasing the 25-year-old for a prolonged period and even agreed a deal worth close to £72million with Barcelona, but the switch failed to come to fruition.

Chelsea have reportedly come close to striking a deal for de Jong as well, so it is clear that Liverpool are not his only Premier League admirers.

Jones believes de Jong will only consider leaving Barcelona if a hugely attractive offer comes forward ahead of the transfer deadline.
