Liverpool legend claims Manchester United 'can't be written off' in top-four battle

Liverpool legend John Barnes believes Manchester United are still in with a shout of making the top four this season.

United's hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League took a huge blow last Saturday. Their defeat to Everton and Tottenham's victory later in the day left Ralf Rangnick's men six points off the top four.

Spurs are now hot favourites to claim the final Champions League spot. Arsenal could move level on points with their North London rivals if they win their game in hand.

But, speaking to BonusCodeBets, John Barnes was unwilling to rule United out of the conversation for the Champions League places. He explained: "Arsenal have a relatively inexperienced side.

"A month ago, I would have said they were favourites for the final Champions League place, but we were probably all quite naïve in thinking they had turned a corner after they started to win matches. They’re still a young and inexperienced side, but the future is bright for Arsenal and the more they stick with Arteta and the young players [the better they will get], they’ll be just fine.

"Tottenham - with Antonio Conte, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min have a bit more know-how and they are ahead of Arsenal in that respect. That said, we can’t write off Manchester United, but between Arsenal and Tottenham right now, Spurs are slight favourites."

Spurs are at home to Brighton this weekend, Arsenal travel to Southampton and United host Norwich. West Ham, who currently sit sixth, host Burnley on Sunday.
