Liverpool given free-kick vs Aston Villa for Naby Keita's foul on Douglas Luiz

It’s fair to say Steven Gerrard wasn’t impressed with referee Jon Moss during Aston Villa’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday.

When asked about Moss, Gerrard said that he hoped his performance would be looked at.

“I just hope that it’s looked at. That’s all I’ll say. I just hope it’s looked at. I hope, I hope it’s looked at,” he said.

And then when told the official would be retiring at the end of the season, the Villa boss simply laughed and said ‘Good.’

But what exactly was Gerrard was annoyed at?

Villa could consider themselves fortunate their early opener was allowed to stand as Ollie Watkins was offside in the build-up to Douglas Luiz’s goal.

However, if you were watching the game on TV, you could hear just how frustrated the home crowd were with the referee throughout the match.

They felt a number of 50/50 decisions went against them and their anger was aimed at Moss.

While he didn’t any make huge errors during the game, it was an accumulation of decisions that appeared to go Liverpool’s way that annoyed the home side.

And we’ve discovered one that Villa have every right to be annoyed with.

In the first half, Luiz was caught nastily by Naby Keita on the ankle. It was a bad tackle and the Liverpool midfielder probably should have seen a yellow card. Luiz went down holding his ankle in pain before grabbing the ball with his hands.

Remarkably, Moss awarded a free kick to Liverpool for Luiz’s handball.

It really was a shocking decision.
