Liverpool captain Niamh Fahey signs new contract

Republic of Ireland defender Niamh Fahey has signed a new contract with Liverpool, the club has announced.

The Galway native joined the Reds in 2018 and captained them to 2021/22 FA Women's Championship title and promotion to the Women's Super League.

She has since helped Matt Beard's side establish themselves in the top flight as they finished seventh 2022/23 before a fourth-place finish last time around.

Fahey is the second Ireland international to pen a new deal with Liverpool this week, after striker Leanne Kiernan did likewise..

"I’m absolutely delighted to have another season in red," Fahey told the Liverpool website. "I really enjoy my time here with the club and after a brilliant last season I’m looking forward to pushing on with the rest of the club.

"It's special for me to have the liver bird on my chest. It’s still very much surreal because I absolutely love this club. Getting to play in this shirt is something I don’t take for granted, so I’m absolutely delighted to have another year in red."

An international centurion with Ireland, Fahey is also hoping to pass some of her experience down to the younger generation as she works towards gaining her UEFA B Licence.

Liverpool's statement confirmed that the 36-year-old will explore opportunities to gain coaching experience alongside Beard and his staff throughout the 2024/25 campaign.

"I'm preparing for a little bit of life after football," she said. "It’s an exciting time for me as well because I’m at that transition period.

"The offer to do some coaching, Beardy spoke with me and I’m so grateful for this opportunity to learn off everyone and get my ideas as well how things work off the pitch."
