This afternoon, defending premiers Sydney FC host reigning champions Melbourne Victory in a rematch of last season's A-League Women grand final, which Victory famously won with a 120th-minute 'Olimpico' goal from Matildas star Kyra Cooney-Cross.

But Sydney FC have revenge in their sights. Indeed, the Sky Blues have been outright favourites this season, sweeping a number of league records on their way to a second consecutive Premiership. Their final challenge? To do the double — something they haven't achieved since 2009 — and cement their spot as the most successful club in competition history.

Both of these clubs are on the verge of some remarkable records if they win today's decider.

For Sydney, it will mark their first premiership-championship double since 2009. It was so long ago that the A-League Women only had ten games in its season and just eight teams — including the now-defunct (but soon-to-be-revived!) Central Coast Mariners.

The Sky Blues have won five trophies since then, and a championship today would cement their spot as the most successful club in the history of the W-League/A-League Women.

But Victory have some history on the line, too. Head coach Jeff Hopkins has been key to the club's rebuild since their double wooden-spoon seasons between 2015 and 2017, but since moving to Melbourne from Brisbane, the Welshman has rebuilt the club to become one of the league's «Big Four».
