Live updates as fires close roads and send black smoke billowing into the air

Welsh fire crews are responding to two serious fires this afternoon: one on the Rhigos mountain above Treherbert, Rhondda Cynon Taff and another at or near a recycling centre in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire.

In Treherbert, smoke was first seen billowing from the mountain earlier this afternoon. Police and fire crews have since been sent to the scene, with firefighters spotted in the village re-filling their fire engines with water, whilst a helicopter stocked-up with water has also been seen flying overhead. Police are also in the area stopping drivers from getting past.

Labour councillor for the village, Scott Emanuel, took to social media to appeal for residents to avoid the area. Sharing photos from the scene, which showed thick smoke billowing across the sky, he said: "Please avoid the Rhigos road, it’s currently closed due to a mountain fire."

Thick black smoke is also billowing into the sky at Milford Haven's Waterston Industrial Estate, which can be seen for miles. Road closures are also in effect there. Locals say they believe the fire has broken out at or near a recycling plant in the town.
