Live updates and analysis from across Wales on GCSE results day 2022
Pupils across Wales will pick up their GCSE results on Thursday, August 25 - the first that have been sat in the summer since 2019. There is again an expectation that grades will dip again.
Papers were adjusted to take into account learning time lost due to the pandemic. Exam bosses in Wales announced they were reining results back to midway between 2019, when summer exams were last sat, and last year's record results under teacher assessment. While grading will be lower than for the last two years of assessed grades, exam content has been cut by as much as 40% in summer 2022 and “grading will be more generous than in a normal year”, said the WJEC.
Some head teachers said they feared exams will not be fair this year because of continued havoc caused by Covid in schools and persistently high staff and pupil absence. But Qualifications Wales and exam board WJEC have insisted the exams were fair and many are relieved to see a return to some normality as Covid recedes.
Last week, there was a dip when A level results were announced. You can read all about that here. However Welsh education minister Jeremy Miles has said exams will have to be adjusted again next year to take into account the knock on effect of the pandemic on education. You can read more about that here.
