Live M6 traffic updates tonight as crash in Cumbria leaves motorway closed

The M6 motorway is closed following a crash in Cumbria tonight (Sunday, March 23).

Emergency services are at the scene on the northbound carriageway - which is shut to traffic between Junction 44 and Junction 45.

The incident was first reported at around 8pm. Delays are building as a result of the closure and a traffic diversion route is in place.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M6 in Cumbria is closed northbound between J44 (near Carlisle) and J45 (near Gretna) following a single vehicle collision.

"Cumbria Police are currently leading a multi-agency response, involving Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, North West Ambulance service and National Highways Traffic Officers, to a single vehicle collision on the M6 northbound approaching Gretna.

"Recovery of the vehicle is expected to be complicated and the northbound carriageway has been closed for safety reasons and to allow the emergency services to work freely.

"Lane 3 of (3) is also closed on the southbound carriageway to assist with scene management."
