LIVE All M56 traffic stopped following 'three-vehicle smash involving lorry' - updates

All traffic has been stopped on the M56 heading towards Manchester following a three vehicle smash involving a lorry.

Firefighters are working quickly to save a casualty trapped in a vehicle.

The M56 is shut off eastbound between junctions J10 A49 Tarporley Road (Stretton) and J9 M6 J20 (Lymm Interchange).

Traffic first began being held at 2.55pm on Thursday, February 17.

Congestion is currently building with delays of around 20 minutes.

There is also congestion on the westbound carriageway due to 'onlookers' according to traffic service Inrix.

The smash involved a lorry and three other vehicles, according to Inrix.

"Three vehicles have been involved in a road traffic collision leaving one person trapped in a hatchback.

"The motorway has been fully closed while emergency services work at the scene.

"Helimed and police are also in attendance. Firefighters are assessing the casualty to determine the best way to extricate them from the vehicle. "
