LIV Golf: Lee Westwood’s 2021 European Super League tweet comes back to haunt him

Lee Westwood is one of the biggest names that has signed up to compete in the inaugural LIV tournament at the Centurion Club in London, that is currently underway.

The new tournament is a breakaway from the PGA and is funded by the Saudi Arabian government (PIF), causing uproar amongst sports fans given the human rights problems encountered in the Middle East.

However, Westwood, who is a massive Nottingham Forest fan has seemed to contradict himself when signing up for the LIV tournament.

Back when the European Super League was planned as a breakaway competition in football, designed to guarantee the select few millions upon millions of pounds instead of honouring sporting integrity, he made his feelings known.

He tweeted a GIF of someone rolling around in money with the simple caption of ‘European Super League.’

Ironically, he has signed up for what appears to be the golfing equivalent of the European Super League by taking part in the LIV tournament.

It’s a reminder to us all that sport is driven by money and it is easy to say the right thing and take what is deemed as the correct stance when you’re removed from the situation.

However, when put in that situation yourself your thought process can be completely different, putting other factors ahead of sporting integrity.

You can’t necessarily blame these sports stars for wanting to make as much money as possible for their families given the shorter career length, but you would want to see them be honest and not be hypocritical like Westwood here.
