Lisandro Martinez to Man Utd: Footage shows why he's called 'Butcher of Amsterdam'

Manchester United announced on Sunday that they have agreed to sign Lisandro Martinez from Ajax.

United have agreed to pay £57m for the Argentine’s services, per the BBC.

Martinez will join the club when a medical is completed and player terms are finalised.

Martinez will be reunited with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. The two worked alongside at Ajax, with Ten Hag bringing Martinez bring the defender to Amsterdam in 2019.

Martinez stands at just 5 foot 9 inches tall. That’s short for a centre-back.

However, despite his stature, Martinez earned the nickname ‘The Butcher of Amsterdam’ during his three-year stint at Ajax.

So, why is that?

Martinez is a tenacious defender who isn’t afraid to smash into players and throw his weight around.

And footage, compiled by YouTuber user KaiiZoFilms, shows him doing just that. The 12-minute video, titled ‘Lisandro Martinez Too Small? Okay, WATCH THIS!’ displays that his height will not be an issue at all.

United have spent a lot of money on Martinez but he could well be worth every penny.

Speaking of his nickname, Martinez said, per the Mirror: “Yes, I am called the carnicero – The Butcher of Amsterdam. We Argentines do everything with passion and when I go out on the pitch, I fight for every ball. If I have to step over dead bodies, I do it.

“I want to win every 50-50 situation because I know that I am fighting for food for every member of my family and for my friends. That is the feeling I have – and every Argentinian has. It is the kind of motivation I cannot explain.
