Lisandro Martinez repeats Erik ten Hag message and reveals Sir Alex Ferguson talks at Man United

Lisandro Martinez has echoed Erik ten Hag by referring to his two trophy triumphs in as many seasons as a sign of progress at Manchester United, while acknowledging there is still room for growth.

The United boss was keen to relay his League Cup and FA Cup successes in defence of his tenure to journalists following Sunday’s 3-0 drubbing by Liverpool, having seen his side lose two of their three opening games this season.

Some United supporters feel unsatisfied by the Dutchman’s two-year reign so far, despite his silverware haul. The club recorded their lowest Premier League finish last season after finishing bottom of their Champions League group and producing a flimsy defence of their League Cup title.

Speaking after the defeat to Liverpool, Ten Hag said: “Listen, we won, the last two years, behind Manchester City, the most trophies in English football, so we performed already the last two seasons.

“And, yes, also this year, we want to win and we want to win trophies. And so I'm quite confident we will build to this. And that is what I did the last 11 years.

“So just be patient, waiting. We will work on the process and we have to improve the process. And we will aim for our next targets and we will go for trophies.”

United were plagued by injury setbacks last season, with Martinez one of those suffering persistent problems. The Argentine only played a total of 14 club matches last term having sustained three separate significant issues.
