Lisa Nandy demands answers after closure date set for asylum seekers in Greater Manchester hotel
Lisa Nandy has written to the government asking for 'clarification' following a decision to scrap plans to house asylum seekers in a Wigan hotel, saying the council could not manage 'dozens of people becoming homeless overnight'.
In August, Kilhey Court in the Worthington area of Standish was announced as one of two hotels in the village to be used to house migrants. But following widespread backlash from locals, who said the hotel was an 'unsuitable location', placements will stop in March 2024.
The Wigan MP took to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Saturday morning (November 4) to share a letter addressed to minister of state for immigration Robert Jenrick. In the letter, she asks Mr Jenrick to address a 'number of questions,' and says it is 'inconceivable' for Wigan Council to take on responsibility for the migrants currently housed at Kilhey Court.

In the letter, Ms Nandy says she would be 'grateful' for answers to four questions. "What plans do they [the government] have to provide support to asylum seekers and the local community if the hotel will remain in use for six more months?," she wrote.
Ms Nandy also asks when the Britannia - the second hotel in Standish to be chosen to house migrants - will also close for asylum seekers.
"Given the assurances that have been made and repeatedly broken regarding the Britannia Hotel, can they confirm that they have formally given notice to end the contract on Kilhey Court, and that this hotel will not be contracted for use again in the future?," she asked.
