Lionel Messi: English pundit wants Argentina to win 2022 World Cup

The 2022 World Cup will almost certainly be Lionel Messi‘s last in an Argentina shirt.

It’s the one major trophy that’s eluded the Paris Saint-Germain superstar throughout the course of his incredible professional career.

Messi came agonisingly close to getting his hands on the coveted accolade in 2014, but Mario Gotze’s extra-time goal in Rio De Janeiro condemned Argentina to a dramatic 1-0 final defeat.

So, 2022 is the Barcelona legend’s last chance to secure the honour that would result in even more football fans recognising him as the undisputed ‘GOAT’.

Argentina are one of the big favourites to win the Qatar World Cup. They’re currently on a 35-game unbeaten run, while Messi’s side have also won both the Copa America and Finalissima in the last year-and-a-half.

Stopping Lionel Scaloni’s talented group of winners certainly won’t be easy, especially now that Messi is back to his sensational best.

Messi’s worldwide fame means there will be plenty of non-Argentines who will be cheering him on out in Qatar.

And one of them is Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

While on Champions League punditry duty for CBS Sports, the Englishman said he’d “love nothing more” than Argentina and Messi to win the World Cup this winter.
